Mullein preparations from Working the Roots: Over 400 Years of Traditional African American Healing by Michelle E. Lee:
Mullein leaf tea for respiratory ailments, coughs, and congestion: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspons of dried mullein flowers and leaves. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. Sweeten with honey if desired.
Mullein and garlic oil for ear infections/aches: In a glass jar, combine 1 teaspoon of chopped garlic with 1 teaspoon of finely-chopped dried or fresh mullein leaves. Cover with olive oil, pouring enough oil to cover 1 inch above the mixture. For 3 days, let mixture sit in a lighted area or on a windowsill to get direct sun. Remove and keep in a dark closet or cabinet for 24 hours, then strain oil into a dropper jar for easy access. Place in refrigerator. Keeps up to 1 year. Warm the dropper of mullein and garlic oil in a cup of of water. Place 3 drops of the oil in the affected ear 2 times daily. Do this once at night, sleeping with the affected ear up and covered with a cotton ball. When standing or sitting after applying during the day, make sure to cover the ear with a cotton ball. Use for up to 3 days on affected ear.
Mullein leaf bath or soak for arthritis and joint pain: Cut 4 to 6 dried leaves per 5 cups of water. Boil in a pot and soak your feet or whole body in a bath for at least 20 minutes.
Mullein leaf poultice: In a big pot, mix 4 parts dried and chipped mullein leaf to 1 part water to 1 part apple cider vinegar (ACV). Heat up and put in a cotton cloth and place on affected area.
Mullein leaf smoke for pulmonary congestion: Pack a pipe or make a cigarette out of dried cut-up mullein leaves. Smoke and inhale 3 times to relieve pulmonary congestion. Repeat twice daily
Mullein leaf wrap: Take a large leaf, soak in warm water, and apply to affected area. Wrap with cheesecloth to keep in place.
